PREMIERING ONE HUNDRED YEARS AFTER WORLD WAR I…

The Italian tradition of Comedia dell’arte grows strange wings in Tarocco: A Soldier’s Tale, a mesmerizing fusion of circus arts, dance, mask-and- puppet theater, original music, elaborate costumes, and intricate animation. Tarocco tells the story of an Italian WWI infantryman, trapped behind enemy lines after barely escaping the gas attacks at Caporetto. To pass the time, the soldier comforts a dying comrade with stories using the images from an ancient deck of playing cards known as the Tarocco Piemontese (a predecessor of modern Tarot cards). What follows is a spellbinding and dark narrative based on the Fool’s Journey of the Tarot.

THE MAGICIAN… THE HANGED MAN… DEATH…

Each new card brings to the stage a mysterious character from the Tarocchi, leading the doomed soldier through twenty-one wondrous labyrinths of the human imagination. Opening on the centennial of Italy’s entry into WWI, Tarocco blends history and fantasy into a wholly new kind of theatrical experience. Handmade Venetian costumes adorn incredible circus artists and dancers in each breathtaking act. Nashville composer Marcin Bela performs with a multitude of live instruments and live vocals, and Alexander Daniloff’s stunning, hand-drawn Tarocco Piemontese are woven into the incredible nonstop animation of Colorado’s Dreambox Workshop. Moving backdrops, giant puppetry, aerial acrobatics, ballet, and more…Tarocco is an experience not to be missed.

“A celebration of creativity and DIY-ingenuity…nothing goes onto the stage without purpose or great attention to detail.” — Mountain Xpress

OpenDoors of Asheville Hosts 7th Annual Fundraiser March 5th, 2016

The gala celebration and art auction directly supports initiatives to help Asheville youth break the cycle of multigenerational poverty through education, enrichment, and opportunity.

On the evening of March 5th, we will present the 7th Annual Art Affair 2016: From Athena to Zeus, inside the stunning new Green Man Brewery location at 27 Buxton Ave on Asheville’s south slope. The event is one of WNC’s most exciting and popular live auctions featuring original artwork and travel experiences.  As always, this event provides vital resources to uplift young people challenged by poverty. All proceeds generated from the gala directly support programs to empower and sustainably enrich the lives of Asheville’s underserved youth.

“The OpenDoors individualized approach to serving the children in our community is real,” explains Event Chair, Dosty Quarrier. “This organization serves many Asheville families struggling to break the very complex and complicated cycle of social, economic, and educational hardship. Please join us for this fun and extraordinary evening to help support positive outcomes for local youth.”

Festivities begin at 7 pm (VIP reception begins at 6:30 pm) with live entertainment. Scrumptiously authentic cuisine and signature libations will be served from many of Asheville’s finest restaurants and social lounges, as well as Green Man Brewing Company. The Athena to Zeus theme offers a modern-day twist on ancient Greek lore, celebrating modern heroes and heroines who teach, mentor, and advocate for students so that they meet their ultimate potential.

This year’s gala features local painter and muralist, Jeremy Russell, and highlights silent and live art from more than 75 regional artists, including painting, ceramics, wood, glass, handcrafted jewelry, travel experiences, and much more. The live auction will be conducted by Andrew Brunk of Brunk Auctions, known for his appearances on Antiques Road Show, and formerly of Christie’s of NYC. Fashion by Ananda Hair Studio and R. Brooke Priddy’s Ship to Shore will be showcased, as well. There will also be the annual presentation of the OpenDoors 2016 Laureate of the Year Award, the highest honor bestowed by OpenDoors of Asheville. This award recognizes and celebrates individuals within the greater WNC community for outstanding service to help eliminate child poverty.

“For the past six years we have watched the energy build around this annual celebration,” says OpenDoors Executive Director, Jen Ramming. “We see philanthropy as a true expression of empathy and compassion in action.”
